Chhiring panjo Sherpa’s Fifth Work MARUBHUMI KO DES MA (Travel Memoir) Unveiled in a Unique and Historic Manner from Jalpa Devi Temple, Dentam
Gyalshing January, 21:The travel memoir “In the Land of the Desert”, written by Chhiringpanjo Sherpa—an established creator of Sikkimese Nepali literature and President of Miramire Sahitya Manch, Dentam was unveiled today at the Jalpa Devi Temple in Dentam. This book launch, which uniquely blended religious devotion with literary consciousness, is being regarded as a rare and possibly first-of-its-kind event in literary history.
The book was formally released amid ritual worship and prayers at the Jalpa Devi Temple. According to participants, the programme highlighted a perspective that views literature not merely as an intellectual pursuit, but also as a form of spiritual practice.
The book was jointly unveiled by Miramire Sahitya Manch Dentam’s Advisor Madhav Bhandari, Vice President Mr Arun Basnet, Secretary Mr Santkumar Khatiwada, Publicity Secretary Mr KN Sharma, Mr Sanju Sharma, and priest Gopal Mishra. The attending literary enthusiasts praised Chhiringpanjo Sherpa’s continuous creative journey, respectfully referring to him as a “Sherpa of literature.”
In the Land of the Desert is Chhiringpanjo Sherpa’s fifth published work. His earlier books—Bhale-Dak, Chhiringpanjo’s Satirical Writings, Invisible Houses, and A Snowy Evening—have already gained popularity among readers. Based on the travel memoir genre, this new work is expected to present not only a geographical journey, but also a journey of cultural experience, human sensitivity, and self-exploration.
Chhiringpanjo Sherpa, who has made long-standing contributions to literature, education, and editing, is a retired Joint Director of the Education Department, Government of Sikkim. He has remained active as a creator through editing various literary magazines and broadcasting stories on All India Radio, Gangtok. For his contributions, he has received numerous honors and recognitions at both national and state levels.
The book launch held in the temple परिसर highlighted the intimate relationship between literature and spirituality, and participants concluded that it has added a new chapter to the Sikkimese literary tradition. Author Sherpa stated that he prepared this fifth memoir during a family foreign tour and dedicated it to his sister-in-law, the late Sabita Lama.
