Gangtok, 17 January 2026:
As part of the weekly inspection drive conducted by the District Administration, Gangtok, a joint inspection was carried out on 17 January 2026 along the stretch of Deorali Bazaar, Gangtok, led by Mr. Abhijeet R. Patil, IAS, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (HQ), under the guidance of the District Collector, Gangtok.
The objective of the inspection was to assess food safety standards, fire safety compliance, and adherence to other statutory and legal requirements by various commercial establishments, including petrol pumps, restaurants, meat shops, and other retail outlets. A total of 16 establishments were inspected during the drive.
During the inspection, several shortcomings were observed with respect to food safety norms, excise compliance, sanitation standards, packaged commodities rules, and statutory documentation. Accordingly, appropriate actions, including issuance of notices, seizures, and preliminary warnings, were initiated against the defaulting establishments by the concerned departments as per existing rules and regulations.
Further, the Urban Development Department (UDD) observed that several establishments were operating with trade licences issued in the name of individuals, while the corresponding GST registrations were in the name of companies or brands, which constitutes a violation of the Trade Licence Rules, 2011. In this regard, all shops, restaurants, and hotels operating under a company or brand name have been advised to rectify the discrepancy immediately, prior to the trade licence renewal due in March 2026, as informed by the Bazaar Officer, UDD.
