DHEW Gyalshing WCSCDWD Conducts Awareness Programme on POCSO Act and Child Helpline Services under BBBP
Gyalshing, 09 January 2026: Aligning policy intent with grassroots action, District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Gyalshing, resumed its Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) initiative for the year 2026 by organizing an awareness programme at Sardung GPU, Gyalshing District.
The programme aimed at enhancing awareness on child protection laws and government support services for women and children, with special focus on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the 1098 Child Helpline.
The session was led by Shri Mahadeo Rao, Child Counsellor / Advocate, District Child Protection Officer (DCPO), Gyalshing, who sensitized participants on various aspects of the POCSO Act, including identification of abuse, legal provisions, mandatory reporting, and the crucial role of community vigilance. He also explained the significance of the 1098 Child Helpline as a 24x7 emergency support system for children in distress.
In addition, the DHEW team disseminated information on the 181 Women Helpline, highlighting its role in providing immediate assistance to women facing violence or distress. The team also briefed participants on the One Stop Centre (OSC), outlining its role and services such as medical aid, legal support, counselling, and temporary shelter. Information on various government schemes for the welfare and empowerment of women and children was also shared.
The programme witnessed active participation from the Vice President and other Panchayat members, GPU staff, local community members, and children, who engaged in discussions and sought clarifications on the issues raised. Their involvement significantly contributed to strengthening awareness at the grassroots level regarding child safety, women’s rights, and available support mechanisms.
DHEW Gyalshing reiterated its commitment to continuing such awareness programmes across the district under the BBBP initiative to promote a safer and more informed society.
