Empowering the future stars: Over 800 New ‘Student Solar Ambassadors’ created across 6 Districts
The Sikkim Implementing Agency (IA) for the Environment Education Programme (EEP) 2025-26 i.e Forest and Environment Department, successfully concluded the first leg of its "Student Solar Ambassadors" workshop series. This significant state-wide initiative engaged over 800 students from Classes X and XII across 18 School Eco-Clubs, covering all six districts of the state.
Operating under the Mission LiFE theme of "Energy Saved," the workshops utilized a "Whole School Approach" to instill sustainable habits through experiential learning. Students were trained in the assembly of solar study lamps, a design specifically developed by the Solar Technicians of the Sikkim EIACP Hub under the Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP).
“By teaching students how to assemble these lamps with their own hands, we are demystifying renewable energy and empowering them to be active participants in energy conservation,” said a representative from the Sikkim IA for EEP.
Lighting the way for Board Exams in a move that marries environmental awareness with academic support, every participating student was provided with a complete solar lamp kit to assemble and take home.
Schools and Principals expressed deep gratitude towards the Government for this initiative. With board examinations approaching for Class X and XII students, these solar lamps provide a reliable, eco-friendly light source for evening studies, ensuring that power fluctuations do not hinder academic preparation.
This workshop series is part of the broader Environment Education Programme (EEP), aiming to create a generation of environmentally conscious citizens. By becoming "Solar Ambassadors," these students are now carrying the message of Mission LiFE—Lifestyle for Environment—into their homes and communities.
