Secretary, Fisheries Department, Undertakes Two-Day Official Tour to Mangan District
The Secretary, Fisheries Department, Government of Sikkim, undertook a comprehensive two-day official tour to Mangan District on 10th and 11th December 2025 to review fisheries infrastructure, assess ongoing departmental activities, and explore opportunities for strengthening aquaculture development across the district. The Secretary was accompanied by officers from the Administrative, Engineering, Accounts and Technical Sections, ensuring a coordinated evaluation of the visited sites.
The tour covered key fisheries assets, beginning with the Live Fish Vending Centre at Mangshila, supported under PMMSY. The team inspected the operational status of the centre and discussed interventions required to make it fully functional for the benefit of local fish farmers, particularly in improving post-harvest handling and market access.
This was followed by a detailed review of the Hee-Geythang Fish Farm and the Carp Fish Unit at Lingdem, where the Secretary assessed existing facilities, identified operational gaps, and deliberated on measures necessary to enhance productivity and service delivery. Emphasis was placed on infrastructure strengthening, optimal utilisation of resources, and ensuring farmer-oriented outcomes under departmental schemes.
The inspection of the Sarchok Trout Fish Farm at Lachung formed an important part of the tour. The Secretary appreciated the efforts of the field staff in maintaining the farm despite challenging conditions and directed the Engineering Wing to prepare a detailed estimate for essential repair and upgradation works. These include hatchery renovation, restoration of water supply lines, construction of staff quarters and washrooms, and repair of selected tanks to maximise the farm’s operational capacity.
The team also visited a proposed site near Yumthang identified for hosting an angling competition scheduled for next year. The Secretary examined the suitability of the location and discussed the preparatory requirements for conducting the event responsibly and successfully.
The two-day visit provided an opportunity to assess ground realities across multiple fisheries facilities and to chart a consolidated plan for strengthening infrastructure and expanding livelihood opportunities for fish farmers in Mangan District. The Secretary reiterated the Department’s commitment to ensuring robust, sustainable, and farmer-centric development of the fisheries sector in the region.
