Khaniserbong, Soreng District | 5 December 2025
A day-long awareness program on Good Manufacturing Practices (Clean Milk Production) and Feeding and Management of Dairy Animals was successfully conducted today at GPK Khaniserbong under Soreng District.
The program was graced by the Hon’ble Chairman, Sikkim Milk Union, as Chief Guest, along with Shri D. R. Sharma, BOD (Soreng Route);
Dr. Tilak Ghatani, Managing Director; Shri Sudip Subba, Panchayat President; Mrs. Rebecca Rai, Vice President; and Dr. N. K. Pradhan, Additional General Manager, besides farmer members of the cooperative societies under the Khaniserbong Route. Over 100 farmers participated.
The program began with a bouquet presentation to the dignitaries, followed by a welcome address by Shri D. R. Sharma, BOD. Shri Sancha Lal Limboo was felicitated for generously leasing land for the society house.
Dr. N. K. Pradhan highlighted the importance of clean milk production, urging farmers to strictly follow hygiene practices to improve milk quality and reduce bacterial contamination. He emphasized that the Union adheres to FSSAI standards and will not compromise on quality.
Dr. Tilak Ghatani, Managing Director, briefed farmers on the growth of the Sikkim Milk Union since 1980, highlighting increases in registered members and Dairy Cooperative Societies (DCS). He shared that the Union now handles daily business transactions of Rs. 30–35 lakh and makes annual milk payments of Rs. 105–115 crore, significantly contributing to rural livelihoods.
He emphasized the strength of the cooperative movement, commitment to quality milk production, and the responsibility of members to safeguard cooperative institutions from external influences. He urged farmers to ensure timely audits, active participation in AGMs, responsible election of office-bearers, freedom of expression, and respect for cooperative ownership.
He also educated farmers on the nutritional value of locally available fodder plants through a booklet distributed during the program to promote efficient use of local feed resources. To support animal health and clean milk production, mineral mixtures, deworming medicines, and milk cans were distributed. He further informed farmers about the supply of BIS-standard cattle feed at Rs. 29 per kg at their doorstep.
The Hon’ble Chairman spoke on farmer-friendly policies including interest-free cow loans and ex-gratia assistance during natural calamities, and thanked the State Government—particularly the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim—for the historic Rs. 8 per liter incentive to dairy farmers.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Shri Sudip Subba, Panchayat President.
