New Modular Operation Theatre Complex Commissioned at Namchi District Hospital; First Surgery Successfully Conducted
Namcgi, 4 December : Namchi District Hospital has commissioned a state-of-the-art Modular Operation Theatre (OT) Complex comprising a Pre-Operative Room, Recovery Room, Pre-Anaesthesia Check-up Room and five fully furnished operation rooms equipped with digital control panels, laminar flooring and HEPA filters.
The complex includes a dedicated disposal zone meeting infection-control and NQAS standards, designed to significantly enhance safe surgical care for patients from Namchi and neighbouring areas.
The new OT complex is equipped with advanced technology, including a C-Arm, Harmonic Cautery, endoscopic units, Laser Radio Frequency Generator and PRP machine, along with other high-end devices required for modern surgical procedures. These upgrades will support general surgery, ENT, orthopaedics and other specialties, reducing referrals and improving access to timely, quality surgical services within the district.
The OT team – OT nurses and OT technicians – have been routinely and proactively cleaning and preparing the extensive OT complex to ensure the facility became operational as early as possible.
Sequential microbiological surveillance (air and surface culture swabs) conducted from 11 November 2025 initially detected fungal and bacterial growth, following which intensive cleaning, fumigation and repeated disinfection rounds were carried out. After the fourth round of cleaning and fumigation, the Microbiologist of Namchi District Hospital certified the OT complex as fit for use on 02 December 2025, confirming satisfactory microbiological results.
This certification enabled the hospital to begin scheduling elective and emergency procedures in the new modular theatres in line with safety protocols. On 03 December 2025 (Wednesday), the OT team marked the occasion with a brief puja before commencing surgeries in the new complex.
The first surgery performed in the new OT complex was a hemithyroidectomy under general anaesthesia, carried out by the ENT Surgeon, supported by the Anaesthesiologist, Assistant Nursing Superintendent (OT), OT Technician In-Charge, OT nurses, OT technicians and support staff.
The inaugural day concluded with the successful completion of two ENT and two orthopaedic surgeries, demonstrating the readiness of the new complex to handle a range of procedures.
The District Health Administration has commended the dedicated efforts of the OT team and supporting staff and reaffirmed its commitment to providing safe, high-quality and patient-centred surgical services to the people of Namchi and South Sikkim.
Namchi District Hospital is a secondary-level public health facility serving the population of Namchi and adjoining areas, providing outpatient, inpatient, emergency and specialised services in line with the Government of Sikkim and Government of India.
