Press Release from the office of the OSD to the Government, Education Department
Information & Public Relations Department
SUBJECT: REGARDING INFORMATION ON SIKKIM INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY, SRIBADAM, SORENG DIST.
Gangtok, 1st December, 2025: The Education Department wishes to inform the public regarding the current status and regulatory concerns pertaining to Sikkim International University (SUI), Sribadam, Soreng Dist, established through THE SIKKIM INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY ACT, 2021 (ACT NO.13 OF 2021).
Although the university was legally created by statute, Sikkim International University (SIU) has not commenced any academic or administrative operations within the State of Sikkim to date. No campus infrastructure, faculty recruitment, admission process, or statutory bodies required for the functioning of a University have been established within the territorial jurisdiction of Sikkim. The information provided on their website:
http:/sikkiminternationaluniversity.org.in/ is also fraudulent and misleading.
Despite the institution’s continued non-operation in Sikkim, it has come to the notice of the Education Department that Sikkim International University continues to appear at Sl. No. 429, as a recognized institution in the University Grants Commission (UGC) portal, The portal raises serious concerns, as such recognition may be misused by the promoters of the University to operate that could mislead students and the general public, despite clear provisions of the ACT to operate only within the State of Sikkim.
The Government of Sikkim takes these concerns seriously. Any representation of academic operations, admission, online programmes, or issuance of degrees from outside the State, using the name of Sikkim International University, would constitute a fraudulent and unauthorized activity, as the university has never commenced operations within Sikkim ever since the Act was passed. The Education Department’s multiple efforts to establish contact with the promoters have not materialized to date.
In light of the above, the Education Department will shortly issue a formal Public Notice directing Sikkim International University (SIU) to establish formal communication with the Education Department within the prescribed time; failure to which, will lead to further actions as mandated by the State Laws and regulatory standards.
Given the prolonged non – non-functioning of the University since its establishment in the year 2021 and the concerns regarding potential misuse of its name. The Government of Sikkim is proposing to process the Repeal of THE SIKKIM INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY ACT, 2021 (ACT NO. 13 OF 2021). Repealing the Act will formally dissolve the legal existence of the University, delisting its name from the UGC and ensure that its name cannot be used for any fraudulent purposes.
Students, Parents and the general public are strongly advised not to engage or enroll in any programme offered by the Sikkim International University (SIU) , Sribadam, whether conducted within Sikkim or outside the state. The Government shall coordinate with the UGC and appropriate authorities to ensure that such misuse is stopped immediately.
The Education reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the interests of the students and maintaining the integrity of Higher Education in the State. All necessary legal and regulatory steps will be taken to ensure transparency, accountability, and public protection.
