Namchi, 29 November : Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) South Sikkim, Namthang organised a comprehensive training and input support programme for the poultry farmers of Rabitar, the village adopted under the National Innovations in Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) project.
As part of the project interventions, backyard poultry rearing of Kuroiler birds has emerged as a significant livelihood component within the Rainfed Farming System Typology, contributing to enhanced income and nutritional security of farm households.
The programme was graced by the Honourable Panchayat of Rabitar, Ms. Pravina Limboo, who chaired the session.
In her address, she expressed gratitude to KVK South Sikkim for consistently supporting the farming community through technical guidance, input delivery, and climate-resilient agricultural practices introduced under NICRA. She emphasised the positive impact of such initiatives in improving the socio-economic conditions of rural farmers.
Dr. Pravesh Shivakoty, Subject Matter Specialist, presented an overview of ongoing NICRA activities in the village and highlighted the achievements made so far. He also shared the roadmap for upcoming interventions aimed at strengthening climate-smart agriculture, livestock-based livelihood systems, and community resilience.
A detailed technical training on scientific poultry care, improved management practices, and vaccination protocols was conducted by Dr. Chewang Norbu Bhutia, Subject Matter Specialist. During the session, farmers were sensitised on chick brooding management, feed supplementation, disease prevention strategies, and the importance of maintaining a regular vaccination schedule.
A live demonstration on vaccination technique and post-vaccination follow-up was also provided, enabling farmers to acquire hands-on skills for maintaining flock health.
Following the training, an input support programme was held wherein essential materials were distributed to the participating farmers to reinforce backyard poultry units and strengthen their livelihood activities under NICRA.
The entire programme was coordinated and moderated by Dr. Obadiah Rai, Senior Research Fellow (NICRA), who ensured smooth conduct of all sessions and farmer interactions.
KVK South Sikkim reiterated its commitment to promoting climate-resilient technologies and empowering farming communities through capacity-building initiatives and field-based support.
