Municipal Commissioner Shri Gary Chopel Reviews Progress at Martam Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility
Gangtok, 20 November 2025: The Municipal Commissioner of Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC), Shri Gary Chopel, conducted a review visit today to the Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility at Martam. He was accompanied by GMC’s technical team and officials of the waste-management agency GNS.
The visit focused on assessing ongoing achievements and issuing fresh directives to further strengthen waste collection, transportation, processing, and co-processing operations.
The Commissioner noted that the facility has recorded significant progress under the visionary guidance of the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay). The Chief Minister’s proactive leadership and approval of key up-gradation works at Martam have enabled GMC and GNS to accelerate the State’s waste-management goals. The State Government remains steadfast in its commitment to achieving zero waste to landfill by the next financial year.
During the inspection, Shri Chopel issued the following directives:
Enhance the efficiency of door-to-door waste collection across all wards.
Optimise waste-transportation routes using GPS-based tracking systems to minimise turnaround time.
Scale up processing capacity at the Martam facility and explore additional co-processing partnerships with local industries.
Establish a real-time monitoring dashboard to track collection, processing, and performance indicators.
GNS has been instructed to submit a detailed progress report on the upgraded processing lines by 1 December 2025.
Expressing confidence in the coordinated efforts of GMC, GNS, and the State Government, the Municipal Commissioner reaffirmed that the ambitious target of achieving zero waste to landfill is well within reach.
