6th November 2025:A week long sports camp organised for tribal students with effect from 1st to 6th of Nov 2025 concluded today on 6th with the organisation of health camp and friendly football match. The program was organised by Tribal Research Institute and Training Centre (TRI & TC) under the Social Welfare Department, Government of Sikkim to commemorate the celebration of Jan Jatiya Gaurav Varsh marking the 150th birth anniversary of tribal freedom fighter and social activist, Bhagwan Birsa Munda on 15th of Nov .
The sports meet and health camp saw the participation of students of 4 EMRS schools of Gangyap , Parakha, Suntoley and Swayem with more than 50 students. These students will be representing Sikkim in various categories of sports activities in the National EMRS competitions.
The objective of the camp was to promote, physical fitness, and sportsmanship among students and spread health awareness to tribal students. During the week-long programme, students participated in various activities designed to enhance their understanding of personal hygiene, nutrition, yoga, and preventive healthcare, alongside sports and fitness sessions.
Government Doctors from STNM hospital provided medical check up including ENT, Eye, Dental, Physiotherapy and conducted sessions on basic health education, health check-ups, mental well-being, and lifestyle management. The sports segment featured events in athletics, football, and other recreational activities aimed at encouraging teamwork, discipline, and holistic development among the participants. One of the important highlight of the camp was sell and display of organic tribal millet and other nutritious food products with an objective of encouraging students to adopt healthy eating habits and healthy lifestyle choices.
The Camp ended with a Friendly Football match between EMRS with Sikkim Sports Academy.
Shri Suman Gurung , Special Secretary, Social Welfare Department highlighted that such initiatives contribute significantly to the overall growth and well-being of tribal students and align with the Department’s continued efforts toward the upliftment and empowerment of tribal communities through education, health, and cultural engagement.
The camp concluded with a valedictory session and distribution of certificates by the Chief Guest Shri Thinley G. Chankapa, Chief Engineer, Social Welfare Department, to the participants in recognition of their active involvement throughout the programme.
