Multidepartmental Joint Land Survey at Chiwabhanjyang Border Marks a Historic Step Toward Developing a Trade Corridor
Gyalshing, November 3:A major land survey was conducted today at the historically and geographically significant Chiwabhanjyang border area along the India-Nepal frontier under the coordination of various government departments. This survey is being viewed as the first concrete and historic initiative toward the creation of a Trade Corridor in the region.
The State Government has outlined a long-term vision to ensure the overall development of the border regions of West Sikkim. In line with this vision, the important programme was led by Mr Sudesh Kumar Subba Area MLA(Maneybong -Dentam), who personally visited the site and supervised the joint survey work alongside technical teams from different departments and central officials.
The departments that participated in the survey included the Department of Commerce and Industries, Forest Department, Roads and Bridges Department, Power and Energy Department, Public Health Engineering (PHE), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Customs Office, Special Intelligence Branch (SIB), and Immigration Department, among others.
During the programme, Mr Gopal K Chettri Joint Secretary Commerce and Industries Department informed that a team of experts deputed by the central government carried out a comprehensive study of the border terrain, road networks, forest cover, power distribution, water resources, and the condition of local settlements to gather firsthand data.
In his address, MLA Sudesh Kumar Subba stated-"Chiwabhanjyang is not merely a border pass- it is a living symbol of friendship, culture, and partnership between Sikkim and Nepal. The priority of the State Government is to transform this region into a hub for trade, tourism, and infrastructure development. This initiative will bring new opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship, and overall improvement in the living standards of local youth.”
It may be noted that Chiwabhanjyang Pass, located near Uttarey Bazar in West Sikkim at an altitude of about 10,200 feet above sea level, is a scenic yet strategically sensitive border region known for its cultural diversity, natural beauty, and historic ties.
Today’s joint land survey is expected to strengthen India-Nepal friendship, enhance border security, and deepen bilateral development cooperation. Based on the findings of the study, a detailed report will now be prepared to guide the development of cross-border trade routes, transport infrastructure, energy access, and residential planning in the area.
Ultimately, the multidepartmental joint survey led by Mr Sudesh Kumar Subba(MKA) marks the beginning of a transformative journey- envisioning Chiwabhanjyang, the “Western Gateway of Sikkim,” as a future center of prosperity, trade, and cooperation, adding a bright new chapter to the economic roadmap of the state.
