Gangtok, October 8: A joint inspection was conducted at Seesa Golai, Gangtok, in response to public complaints regarding a newly constructed building named Sunrise Plaza.
The purpose of the inspection was to assess the structural integrity of the building and evaluate potential hazards posed to surrounding properties.
The inspection was led by Shri. Mahendra Chettri, Sub Divisional Magistrate, was accompanied by Joint Director District Disaster Management Authority, Deputy Director, District Disaster Management Authority, Joint Director Mines and Geology Department and her team, Assistant Town Planner, Urban Development Department, Town Planner Gangtok Municipal Corporation, Assistant Engineer Buildings and Housing Department and the complainants.
The inspecting team made the following critical observations:
* Multiple visible cracks were observed on various sections of the building.
* Several columns and beams were found to be bent and structurally compromised.
* As per the approved blueprint issued by the Urban Development Department (UDD), the building is permitted to have 5 and ½ stories, the actual structure, however, has 6 and ½ stories, indicating a clear violation of the sanctioned building plan.
* The building's compromised structural condition and illegal vertical extension pose a significant risk to adjacent buildings and residents in the vicinity.
* The Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Gangtok, directed UD&HD to immediately issue a stop order to the building owner and all the departments to submit the detailed technical report for taking onward necessary action.
