Cooperation Department Organizes ‘Shramdaan’ Programme Under the Theme Swachhotsav; Hon’ble Minister Leads the Initiative at Auto Emission Smoke Testing Centre, Deorali
Gangtok, September 25, 2025: As part of the nationwide Swachhata Hi Seva campaign and in celebration of the spirit of community service under the theme Swachhotsav, the Cooperation Department organized a Shramdaan (voluntary labour) programme today at the Auto Emission Smoke Testing Centre, Deorali, opposite the Siliguri taxi stand under the banner - Ek Din Ek Ghanta Ek Sath (8 AM - 9 AM)
The programme is part of the International Year of Cooperatives - 2025 activity in convergence with the Swacchhata Hi Sewa campaign of the Government of India.
It was kicked off by Shri. Arun Kumar Upreti, Hon’ble Minister for Cooperation, who led from the front in the cleanliness drive, emphasizing the importance of a clean environment for a healthy society. Senior officials, staff from the Cooperation Department, and members of local cooperative societies also actively participated in the initiative.
The event began with a brief address by the Hon’ble Minister, who highlighted the role of cooperatives in promoting not just economic activities but also social responsibility. He reiterated the call of Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision for a Garbage-Free India and encouraged all departments and citizens to contribute wholeheartedly to the mission.
Secretary Cooperation apprised the participants about the Swachhata program being carried out as instructed by the Ministry of Cooperation in convergence with IYC 2025.
Our Cleanliness Target Unit (CTU) was the Auto Emission Smoke Testing Centre as it is an area very often frequented by the public, needing a cleanliness drive.
Hon’ble Chairperson, Secretary Cooperation , Principal RCS, RCS, MD of SISCO, ED of SCCS, representative from SIMFED, officials and staff of Department and Apex Societies, GMC, SHGs enthusiastically took part in cleaning the premises of the Auto Emission Smoke Testing Centre and its surrounding areas, collecting plastic waste, sweeping public spaces, and spreading awareness among locals and vehicle owners about the importance of maintaining cleanliness in public places.
The Shramdaan initiative aligns with the Government’s continued efforts to institutionalize cleanliness as a mass movement and foster behavioural change at the grassroots level.
It may be noted that this activity was done in coordination with Gangtok Municipal Corporation and UDD.
Further, the Shramdaan program was also simultaneously conducted by all District Offices of the Cooperation Department aligning with the Swachh District, Swacch Sikkim.
The Cooperation Department remains committed to conducting such impactful programmes in collaboration with cooperative societies and the public to promote the ideals of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and environmental sustainability.
