The Chairperson of the Sikkim State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Government of Sikkim, Smt. Deepa Khatri along with other members called on the Hon'ble Governor of Sikkim, Shri Om Prakash Mathur at Raj Bhavan Gangtok today.
During the courtesy meeting, Smt. Deepa Khatri briefed the Hon’ble Governor that the Commission is going to launch “Sunaulo Bachpan”, a year-long campaign with the objective of safeguarding and nurturing the rights, dignity, and holistic development of every child in the State. She also mentioned various initiatives being undertaken by the Commission for the protection and promotion of child rights in the State.
The Hon’ble Governor emphasized that awareness regarding child rights is very important in society. He further stated that people must be made aware of the existing laws and safeguards for children by organizing various programmes and initiatives such as awareness camps, poster campaigns, rallies, slogans, and street plays.
The Hon’ble Governor also highlighted that the effective implementation of laws is essential for the safety and development of children.
Furthermore, the Hon’ble Governor stressed that, along with the Government and Administration, all sections of society have a vital role to play in protecting child rights and ensuring the welfare of children. He directed the Commission to adopt a community-driven approach in this regard.
Moreover, the Hon’ble Governor emphasized the need for a more collaborative approach to tackle the menace of drugs in the State, adding that special attention should be paid to this issue.
The Hon’ble Governor extended his best wishes to the Chairperson and members of the Commission for their continued efforts in ensuring that every child in society feels safe and secure, and grows up in a better environment.
