Centre for Addiction Medicine, Chuwatar, hosted a Continuous Nursing Education (CNE) programme on Psychiatric Emergencies at CAM, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Chuwatar, West Pandam, on 12th September 2025. The programme witnessed the active participation of 30 attendees, including doctors, ANS, DNS, and nursing staff from CAM and Singtam Hospital.
The session commenced with a warm welcome address by Mr. Suren, Staff Nurse. As a mark of respect, the guest was felicitated with a khada.
This was followed by an insightful talk from Dr. Rajiv Gurung, MD Psychiatry (CAM), on mental health and common mental disorders encountered in hospital practice.
Dr. Sanjiba Dutta, HOD, Department of Psychiatry, SMIMS–CRH & Advisor, Sikkim State Branch of IPS, the resource person for the programme, delivered a comprehensive session on psychiatric emergencies, emphasizing their significance in both hospital and community settings. He explained the different types of psychiatric emergencies and highlighted how these conditions, if not managed promptly, could endanger both patients and those around them. He elaborated on the role of nursing staff, stressing the importance of early identification of warning signs, ensuring patient safety, providing immediate first-line care, and following proper admission procedures. He also discussed treatment protocols, including the use of emergency medication, de-escalation techniques, and supportive communication skills. The session was highly practical and interactive, equipping the nursing staff with essential knowledge and confidence to manage psychiatric crises effectively.
The session was further enriched by Dr. Raju Singh, DMS, who shared his professional experiences in dealing with psychiatric cases and provided a meaningful summary of the discussions.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Santoshi Khanal, followed by an interactive Q&A session. The event ended with a lunch arranged for all participants.
