Report on 10-Day Special Awareness Session on Women-Centric Schemes and Policies held at Pangthang Anganwadi Centre
Gangtok, September 05:
The Women, Child, Senior Citizen and Divyangjan Welfare Department, under the leadership of Ms. Manikala Gurung, Social Welfare Officer, Gangtok District, and organized under the banner of District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Gangtok District, successfully conducted a 10-day Special Awareness Session on Women-Centric Schemes and Policies at Pangthang Anganwadi Centre.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from Anganwadi Workers, Self Help Group (SHG) members, and women from the local community, reflecting a strong commitment towards collective empowerment and awareness.
The session commenced with a welcome address by Miss Nisha Hangma Subba (DHEW), who emphasized the role of Mission Shakti in strengthening initiatives aimed at women’s empowerment and welfare.
Ms. Anuriya Subba, Advocate, High Court and Subordinate Court of Sikkim, delivered an insightful talk on women-related legislations, highlighting the legal safeguards available to women under:
* The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 – ensuring protection and remedies for women against physical, emotional, and economic abuse.
* The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 – stressing the role of Internal Complaints Committees and formal redressal procedures.
* The Juvenile Justice Act – safeguarding vulnerable children and young girls, ensuring rehabilitation and protection from exploitation.
* Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Legal Provisions – addressing critical issues like trafficking, sexual exploitation, assault, and cruelty against women, while emphasizing effective implementation.
She further emphasized that laws are specially designed for women’s safety, equality, and empowerment, with the aim to protect their rights, stop exploitation, and provide equal opportunities in society. Ms. Anuriya urged participants to be well-informed about these legislations and ensure their proper implementation at the community level.
Mr. Biren Giri, District Mission Coordinator, elaborated on women-centric schemes under Mission Shakti. He discussed:
* The role of the One Stop Centre (OSC) in providing integrated support to women facing violence.
* The Women Helpline (181) as an immediate support mechanism.
* Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) for safeguarding the rights and education of the girl child.
He further encouraged SHG members and Anganwadi Workers to play an active role in connecting women with these facilities and ensuring maximum outreach.
As part of the programme, sanitary pads were distributed among the participants, promoting menstrual hygiene awareness alongside the key theme of women’s welfare.
The session concluded with closing remarks by Miss Nisha Hangma Subba, who extended gratitude to all participants, resource persons, and organizers. She reiterated the importance of collective responsibility in advancing women’s rights, safety, and empowerment.
