The Sikkim State Commission for Women, in collaboration with the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice, and Sikkim Chronicles, organized a talk show on "Women Rights and the New Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita – A Step towards Gender Equality" in Gangtok on September 2, 2025.
Smt. Paru Ruchal, Senior Superintendent of Police, Pakyong District, highlighted that the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) is women-centric and emphasized the importance of being aware of various laws and legislations. She stated that the police department works with NGOs, Child Welfare Committees, and women-centric organizations to provide justice to victims of human trafficking, sexual harassment, and domestic violence.
Advocate Ms. Sashi Rai discussed the new BNS as a gender-friendly justice system, noting that marital rape and sexual abuse on the pretext of marriage are offenses under the new law. She encouraged women victims to report cases of atrocities and seek free legal aid from the State Legal Services Authority.
The talk show aimed to promote awareness about women's rights and the new BNS, fostering gender equality and empowerment.
