Gyalshing,August 30:Krishi Vigyan Kendra(KVK), Gyalshing organised a distribution-cum- demonstrations and Training programme on scientific cultivation of Sunflower Variety Sunbright at Nazoor ward under 33 Yangsum GPK, Gyalshing District,today.
District Collector Gyalshing Mr Tenzing D Denzongpa graced the event as Chief guest and actively participated in the field sowing programme.
The dignitaries present were Additional Director Agriculture Mr Karma Sherpa, Sr scientist & Head KVK, Mr Bhison Pradhan, Subject Matter Specialist Horticulture-cum- Project Officer for the Chisey Pokwa Smriti Bagan of Yangsum GPK Ms Sangay Palmoo Bhutia, SMS Agronomy Mr JP Dulal, SMS Soil Sc. Ms Til Kri Limboo and staff of KVK.
The programme also had the gracious presence of panchayat members Mr MS limboo and Ms Bhim Rani Limboo of Yangsum GPK.
Chief guest in his address urged the farmers for active participation in agri-allied activities and highlighted to convert the fallow land to cultivable land.
The detailed Powerpoint presentation on scientific cultivation of Sunflower was presented by SMS Agronomy and Sr.Scientist & Head ,Mr.Bhison Pradhan.
It is to mention that Sunflower is a newly introduced crop in Sikkim and after two successive years of trials and testing it has been observed that in Sikkim, sunflower can be cultivated two times in a year (March-April and Aug-mid Sept).
In view of the mission of Govt.of Sikkim for the conversion of barren and fallow land to cultivable land and under “connect to earth” programme the field demonstration on sunflower sowing, plant spacing , manuring were demonstrated with hands on training involving the participants.
This programme comes under 3rd episode under “Connect to Earth “ and conversion of fallow land to cultivable land under the guidance of DC Gyalshing
The farmers also displayed locally grown organic horticulture agriculture products in the exhibition stalls. Total of 42 participants benefited with Sunflower Seeds Variety Sunbright.
