The Annual Budget Estimates for 2026–2027 was presented at the Conference Hall of Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC), in accordance with Section 51(5) of the Sikkim Municipalities Act, 2007, which mandates that such a meeting be conducted by 31st August each year.
The meeting was chaired by the Hon’ble Mayor and attended by the Hon’ble Deputy Mayor, Hon’ble Advisor (GMC), and Hon’ble Councillors of GMC. Also present for the meeting were the Municipal Commissioner and Officers and staff of GMC.
The meeting began with the Municipal Commissioner giving a brief summary of the Budget Report. He informed the House that the Budget meeting had to be conducted by 31 August in line with the rules laid down by the Sikkim Municipalities Act, 2007.
The Municipal Finance Officer (MFO) then gave a detailed presentation on the Budget Report for the previous year while also delving at length on the Revised Budget Estimate for the current Financial Year 2025-26 and the Estimate for the upcoming financial year 2026-27.
The subsequent open discussion witnessed the Hon’ble Councillors deliberating on measures to boost revenue generation and ensure savings, thereby enabling the Corporation to undertake more development works.
The Hon’ble Advisor, in his address, advised on the need to streamline works to ensure efficiency and boost revenue generation.
The Hon’ble Deputy Mayor commented on major works successfully carried out during the tenure of the sitting Councillors, while expressing gratitude to the Hon’ble CM for his unconditional support.
The meeting concluded with the Hon’ble Mayor offering the House his congratulations for a fruitful and smoothly executed Budget meeting, while also discussing at length certain issues that ought to be addressed at the earliest possible.
