Friday Field Day – Episode 49: Mission to Revive Barren Land for Cultivation under the Connect Earth Programme
Pakyong, August 30: The Friday Field/Farm Day – Mission Revival of Barren/Fallow Land for Cultivation under the Connect Earth Program was observed today with enthusiastic participation from students and professors of SRM University, Gangtok, Sikkim. The programme was facilitated in collaboration with the Additional District Collector Dev. Office, Pakyong District, along with local community stakeholders.
The academic team was led by Mr Namsa Hang Limbu (Assistant Professor & Teacher Coordinator), accompanied by faculty members Prof Praveen Rizal and Dr Niranjan Debnath from the Department of Social Sciences, SRM University, Sikkim.
The day’s proceedings began at the Connect Earth Sweat Contribution Centre, Samsing GPU, where the visiting team was received by Mr Robin Pd Sewa, Additional District Collector Dev., Pakyong District, along with Mr Sangay Tamang, BDO Pakyong, Mr Sanju Pradhan, Assistant Director PRI, and the officers and staff of ADC, BDO, and Assistant Director PRI Office. As part of the mission, the students and officers together carried out plantation of millets and beans on previously barren land, marking a step forward in reviving fallow fields for sustainable cultivation.
Addressing the gathering, ADC Dev Mr Robin Pd Sewa expressed his delight over the active participation of youth in the Connect Earth Program. He emphasised that the involvement of students in hands-on agricultural activities strengthens the foundation of the primary sector, promotes traditional farming practices, and reinforces the vision of sustainable livelihoods.
Faculty members and students shared their reflections, highlighting their gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the revival of agriculture. They also noted the importance of field-based learning in connecting academic knowledge with real-life practices, thereby advancing the cause of global good.
To tie up with the Programme of Connect Earth-Sweat Contribution Center and SRM University, the visit was coordinated by Mr Lalit Sharma, NCUI Youth Committee Board Member and youth cooperator .
In addition to the above, report all five Block Administrative Centres (BDOs), 28 GPUs, Hon’ble Panchayat representatives, and employees from across the district also actively participated in the mission. Their joint participation further strengthened the collective resolve of the community to revive barren and fallow lands through coordinated effort and people’s participation.
The programme concluded with a reaffirmation of commitment from all participants to spread the message of agriculture revival, environmental stewardship, and collective community action under the Connect Earth Sweat Contribution Centre Programme.
