In compliance with the order of the Hon’ble High Court of Sikkim in WP (PIL) and as per the guidelines issued under Notification No. 26/Home/2015, a joint inspection team carried out the scheduled bi-monthly inspection at Kundan Hydro Pvt. Ltd. and Madhya Bharat Power Project Limited on 28th August 2025.
The inspection was led by Mr Tshering Norgyal Theengh, ADC (HQ) Gangtok, accompanied by SDPO Gangtok, Deputy CFO (Fire), ACF Forest (T)Gangtok, Senior Geologist (Mines & Geology), Assistant Engineer and team (Water Resource Department) Assistant Engineer (power department ), Training Officer /DDMA, Plant head and officials from power plants.
At the Kundan Hydro site located at 14 Mile Taksamchu, ADC directed company officials to strictly enhance safety compliance. Key directives included the installation of a secured entry gate, placement of CCTV cameras, display of warning signboards, and strengthening of other preventive measures to avoid accidents. These arrangements have been mandated to be completed before the next bi-monthly inspection.
Furthermore, the Safety Officer of Kundan Hydro Pvt. Ltd. has been instructed to submit a comprehensive safety plan to the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Gangtok, at the earliest.
At the Madhya Bharat site at 9th Mile, the inspecting team observed the opening of the spill gate. Officials of Madhya Bharat informed that, as directed by the District Collector-cum-Chairman, DDMA, a third-party external safety audit of the plant has been scheduled shortly. ADC further instructed Madhya Bharat to prepare IEC materials on preparedness for circulation among residents of the lower belts. He also mandated the inclusion of awareness programmes in the upcoming Gram Sabhas.
The SDPO, Gangtok, directed both power plants to submit details of their employees to the respective thanas for proper verification. Compliance with this directive will be reviewed during the next bi-monthly inspection.
