48th Episode of Friday Field/Farm Day Observed under Connect Earth Programme at Pakyong.
Pakyong, August 23:
The Office of the Additional District Collector (Development), Pakyong District, organised the Friday Field/Farm Day – Mission Revival of Barren and Fallow Lands under the Connect Earth Sweat Contribution Center, Pakyong. This event was the 48th episode under the program.
Mr Tshering Gyatso Lepcha, National Awardee on Sustainable Agricultural Practices, also known as the Millet Man of Sikkim, attended the programme along with his spouse, Mrs Phurmit Lepcha, Owner of T-Chu Aom Organic Productions, Dzongu, North Sikkim.
During the visit, they contributed millet seedlings for transplantation at the Center. The contribution aimed at supporting the mission to revive barren lands, conserve indigenous crop varieties, and promote sustainable farming practices. The effort also highlighted the importance of developing seed banks for cereals, pulses, and vegetables to safeguard traditional varieties for future use.
The Office of the Additional District Collector (Development), Pakyong District, acknowledged the support of Panchayats, Block Development Officers, and employees of the Rural Development Department, Pakyong District, for their participation in the programme.
The mission seeks to protect indigenous varieties, ensure food security, and advance agricultural sustainability through the Connect Earth initiative, which focuses on the utilisation of barren and fallow land for productive cultivation.
Through the weekly observance of Friday Field/Farm Day, the programme is gradually building a collective approach towards land utilisation and crop conservation, linking the revival of agricultural land with community well-being.
