Joint Inspection Conducted to Address wires lying haphazardly in and around Mg Marg Gangtok
Gangtok, August 18:
A joint inspection was conducted under the direction of the Assistant Collector (AC), Gangtok, to identify and resolve issues related to disorganised and potentially hazardous overhead wiring in the city.
The inspection was attended by the Joint Director DDMA, Training Officer DDMA and team, SE smart city UDD and team, AE power and team, Sr BO GMC and team and representatives from Internet Service Providers
The inspection began at Titanic Park, followed by Children’s Park, Tibet Road, MG Marg (near Star Hall), Namnang Road, and concluded at Lal Bazar.
At Titanic Park, a coil of unorganised wires was found near the taxi stand. Direction was given to all the Internet Service Providers to identify all unused wires, further, all the active but poorly arranged wires must be properly secured and punched.
Several utility poles were found bent due to the excessive load of cables. Poles no longer in use particularly at Children’s Park, Tibet Road, and Lal Bazar were marked for removal.
In other locations such as Union Bank and Hotel Tashi Delek, wires were observed passing over the buildings. Though not coiled, these overhead wires were deemed unnecessary and are to be removed.
At the backside of Lal Bazar (Kanchendzonga Shopping Complex), it was observed that wires are hanging below the sheds of shops. The team recommended that these be rearranged and routed properly above the shed structures.
Following the inspection, the Joint Director of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) emphasised that to prevent future issues, especially in developing areas where Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) are active, strict adherence to organised wiring practices and safety protocols is essential.
Subsequent meeting was held at the chamber of the District Collector where necessary directions were given to the Internet Service Providers for strict compliance with the direction issued in the inspection.
A timeframe of two days is given by the District Magistrate, Gangtok, Mr Tushar Nikhare for the removal and realignment of wires in the identified places failing to which an order is issued under the DM Act wherein Gangtok Municipal Corporation is authorised for the removal of wires for non-compliance
