The Yangang Sub-Division witnessed a historic and unforgettable celebration today as the curtains fell on the 79th Independence Day festivities with a grand finale at PM Shri Government Senior Secondary School, Yangang. The day was marked with patriotic fervour, cultural vibrancy, sportsmanship, and heartfelt recognition of excellence across diverse fields.
Arrival of Dignitaries & Flag Hoisting
The day began with the arrival of Special Guests at 8:30 AM, followed by the grand welcome of the Chief Guest, Smt. Raj Kumari Thapa, Hon’ble Deputy Speaker, SLA cum Area MLA, 15-Rangang Constituency at 9:00 AM. She was accompanied by an esteemed gathering of Special Guests, including Shri C.L. Gurung (Advisor, Food Processing Dept., Govt. of Sikkim), Shri S. B. Rai (OSD, Agriculture Dept.), Smt. Denkila Bhutia (OSD to HMLA), Shri R.K. Basnet (CEC & Vice President, SKM Party), Shri Tengayla Namka (CLC President), Shri L.B. Chettri (Principal PTC Yangang), Shri K.L Dahal (SDM, Yangang), BDO Yangang Smt Needay Bhutia, Shri Subash Tamang and many other eminent personalities from government departments, Schools, defence services, Honourable Zilla Panchayats, Honourable Panchayats, and the local community.
At exactly 9:05 AM, the National Flag was proudly hoisted by the Chief Guest, filling the grounds with the sound of the national anthem sung by students and the gathered crowd. This was followed by a parade march featuring contingents from PM Shri YSSS, East Point School, South Point Academy, and Mainam Nursery School, along with NCC cadets.
Ceremonial & Cultural Highlights
The ceremonial segment began with Deep Prajwalan accompanied by Gayatri Mantra chanting by YSSS students. The Youth Wing of the Organising Committee presented floral bouquets to the dignitaries, followed by the reading of the Hon’ble Governor’s message by the SDM, Yangang, and the Hon’ble Chief Minister’s message by the BDO, Yangang.
A Zumba performance by YSSS students added a refreshing burst of energy, followed by dance presentations from various schools. In the Primary Level Dance Competition, Govt. PS Upper Satam took the 1st position, Mainam Nursery School came 2nd, and Govt. PS Upper Neya secured 3rd place. In the JHS Level Dance Competition, East Point School claimed the top spot. For the Secondary and Senior Secondary School Level, Govt. Senior Secondary School, Karungthang emerged champions.
The Best Parade Contingent Award went to East Point School. The Safai Karmachari Award was presented to Shri Bikash Gurung and Shri Jeewan Rai for their dedicated service.
Academic Excellence Recognised
One of the most inspiring moments of the day was the felicitation of toppers from Class X and XII across different streams. Among the Class X toppers were Roman Darjee, Johan Chhetri, and Renuka Chhetri. Class XII toppers in Vocational, Commerce, and Humanities streams were also honoured, including names like Anmol Darjee, Nirmal Phokrel, Leelan Chhetri, and Munna Chhetri. The Science stream topper Sonam Ongmu Lepcha received special applause.
Special Category & Farmer Awards
The celebration also recognised the invaluable contribution of community members through Special Category Awards. Anganwadi workers, ASHA workers, and achievers in animal husbandry, hygiene, entrepreneurship, and homestay management were honoured, including names like Kumari Pradhan, Meena Rai (Subba), CB Bhutia, Yougen Sherpa, Dhuni Homestay, and Yangchen Doma Bhutia.
The Best Farmer Awards were conferred upon:
• Shri Sajan Kumar Rai – Lower Samrok, Yangang Rangang GPU
• Shri Birkha Bahadur Limboo – Namphok, Sripatan Gagyong GPU
• Shri Ram Lall Chettri – Upper Mangzing, Niya Mangzing GPU
• Ms. Buddha Maya Rai – Lower Kolthang, Kolthang Tokday GPU
• Smt. Padam Kumari Limboo – Dojok, Rabong Khop GPU
• Shri Indra Bahadur Rai – Lower Gangla, Rankey Sangmo GPU
Literary & Cultural Competitions
The inter-school Speech Competition saw Sonam Palmu Bhutia (Class XII, Science) claim 1st position, followed by Kanon Rai and Swastika Sharma. The Junior Level Painting Competition winners were Anjana Gurung, Albina Thatal, and Sikscha Rai, while the Senior Level Poster Making Competition was topped by Nisamma Rai, followed by Ujjwal Ramudamu and Jenila Limboo. In the Essay Writing Competition, Drishti Basnett took first place, with Rosina Chettri and Srastha Gurung as runners-up.
Sports Finals & Displays
The afternoon was dominated by high-energy sporting events. The Junior Boys’ Football Final and the Senior Men’s Football Match drew loud cheers from the crowd. A Ball Passing (Men’s above 50 years) event, sponsored by NLG, and a Ball Passing (Women’s) contest, sponsored by Subash Tamang, added a light-hearted competitive spirit to the celebration.
A Yoga presentation by Sripatam JHS during half-time of the football match showcased health and wellness traditions, while a Rai Saleka dance performance by YSSS students infused the day with ethnic cultural charm.
Felicitations & Tokens of Love
Token of love and appreciation were presented to dignitaries, including the Principal of PTC Yangang, government officials, and community leaders. The gesture reflected the unity and mutual respect that marked this year’s celebration.
Closing Ceremony
As the sun dipped towards the horizon, the final vote of thanks was delivered by Mr. Til Prasad Gautam, Accountant, SDM Office Yangang, expressing gratitude to all participants, organisers, sponsors, and the public for making the event a grand success. At 5:30 PM, the flag was ceremonially lowered, bringing the 79th Independence Day Celebration at Yangang to a close.
A Celebration to Remember
From the vibrant march past to the soulful cultural performances, from the recognition of our farmers and achievers to the lively sports finals, today’s celebration embodied the essence of “Unity in Diversity”. The presence of distinguished guests, the enthusiastic participation of schools, and the overwhelming public support made the day not only a tribute to our nation’s independence but also a testament to the strength and spirit of the Yangang community.
The final day will be remembered as a perfect blend of patriotism, culture, sportsmanship, and community pride, leaving everyone inspired and looking forward to the 80th Independence Day with even greater zeal.
