PRESS RELEASE FROM THE OFFICE OF THE ADDITIONAL POLITICAL SECRETARY TO HCM, NAMCHI

Information & Public Relations Department

Date: 12-Aug-2025
Inspiring Visit to Government Primary School, Upper Borong
Namchi, 12 August 2025: A delegation comprising Hon’ble Chairman, Power Advisory Board, Shri Sonam Pintso Bhutia; Additional Political Secretary to HCM, Namchi District, Shri Bishnu P. Sharma; OSD to Power Department, Shri Suk Hang Subba; CLC President Rangang-Yangang, Shri Tengayla Namka; and the CLC Barfung Team paid a meaningful and inspiring visit to Government Primary School, Upper Borong.
This school, once closed for a long period due to low enrolment, was personally visited by Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) in 26 December 2021. Recognizing the importance of education in rural areas, the HCM directed the concerned department to reopen the school with a concept of Model Primary School along with Hostel Facility. Under the initiative of the then Area MLA Shri. Bhutia, the school reopened in academic session 2022.
Today, the school stands as a unique model—providing not just quality education but also residential facilities for students from economically disadvantaged families, with support from the Government, School Management Committee, and the local community. The school enforces English-speaking as compulsory within its premises, enhancing language skills alongside academic learning.
Due to these initiatives, student enrolment has surged from near zero to 76 students, making it possibly the largest standalone primary school in Sikkim. It now serves as an exemplary institution aligned with the Hon’ble Chief Minister’s vision of building a Golden, Prosperous, and Capable Sikkim through quality education.
The visiting delegation held interactive sessions with the School Management Committee, teachers, and community members to understand current needs and challenges. They assured their support for providing essential resources and pledged to work collaboratively for the school’s holistic growth.
The school community expressed heartfelt gratitude to the dignitaries for their encouragement, which has brought renewed energy and hope to both educators and learners. A short congratulatory program was also held to honour the newly appointed Chairman, APS to HCM, and OSD.
Together, we move forward towards a brighter educational future for Sikkim
