Training Conducted for Primary Workers under Digital General Crop Estimation Survey (DGCES)
Namchi, 21 July :
The Department of Agriculture, Namchi District, conducted a one-day training programme for Primary Workers under the Digital General Crop Estimation Survey (DGCES) on 21st July 2025 at the DAC Conference Hall, Namchi. The programme aimed to enhance the technical skills and understanding of field staff for effective and accurate implementation of crop estimation procedures.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Mr. Wangyal Lepcha, Deputy Director of Agriculture, Namchi, who emphasized the importance of precision in data collection under DGCES. He noted that the data collected will not only reflect the agricultural performance of the district and the state but will also play a crucial role in determining allocations and support under major Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS).
He also highlighted that schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) require a minimum of 5-7years of crop cutting data for accurate yield estimation and premium calculation. Hence, the role of Primary Workers is vital in laying a reliable foundation for such long-term policy impacts.
A total of 40 Primary Workers from various blocks of Namchi District actively participated in the training.
The technical session was conducted by Miss Nikam Tamang, Agriculture Development Officer (ADO), Namchi, who provided detailed guidance on key components of the DGCES implementation.
She explained the importance of correctly identifying and recording the survey number, including how to determine the highest survey number in a village.
Clarified that a total of three forms are required to be filled during each crop cutting experiment and guided participants on accurately completing each.
Demonstrated how to draw a polygon-shaped boundary of the crop plot using the mobile application and GPS.
Highlighted the need to record dry weight data accurately for different crops to ensure yield estimates are reliable.
Emphasized the importance of capturing and uploading proper photographs at each stage of the survey for transparency and record-keeping.
Her session included a hands-on demonstration and real-time doubt-clearing that helped participants gain confidence in carrying out DGCES activities effectively. The programme also had the gracious presence of Dr. Nation Chamling, Deputy Project Director, ATMA Namchi District, along with Inspectors from the Agriculture Department, who encouraged and motivated the participants with their insights and field-level experience. Their presence added value and oversight to the training programme.
The training concluded with an interactive session where field challenges were addressed, and the department assured ongoing support and technical guidance throughout the crop estimation season.
