Friday Field/Farm Day – A Successful Mission for Revival of Barren Land, Food Security & Youth Wellbeing.
Episode - 43
Pakyong, July 11:
The Office of the Additional District Collector Dev. Pakyong District is proud to share the ongoing success of our pioneering initiative “Friday Field/Farm Day – Mission Revival of Barren Land for Cultivation.” What began as a humble effort to transform underutilised lands into productive agricultural spaces has now blossomed into a vibrant movement, deeply rooted in sustainable development and human well-being.
With the united efforts of Zilla and Gram Panchayats, six Block Development Offices, 28 Gram Panchayat Units, and the committed staff of the ADC Dev Office, this initiative has turned once-barren lands into thriving fields. Every Friday, government officials and local citizens step into the soil together—not only to cultivate crops but to cultivate a connection with Mother Earth.
This mission has significantly enhanced the production of local food grains and vegetables, supporting our community’s nutritional security and food sovereignty. But its deeper impact lies in re-establishing the human connection with the land, especially among the younger generation. As youth engage with the soil, they rediscover the values of responsibility, patience, resilience, and respect for nature.
Connecting with Earth is not just an act of farming—it is a spiritual and grounding experience that rejuvenates our body, mind, and soul. It reminds us of our place in the ecosystem and our duty to protect and nourish it. In these times of rapid urbanization and disconnection from nature, Friday Field/Farm Day stands as a powerful reminder that true development is possible only when it is in harmony with the Earth.
The initiative has also contributed significantly to the well-being and fitness of all participants. Regular physical engagement in farming activities promotes healthy lifestyles, mental clarity, and a sense of collective purpose—laying a strong foundation for youth to take on the future responsibilities of Sikkim with wisdom and compassion.
This is not just a program—it is a movement of revival, of land and spirit.
The Additional District Collector Dev Office expresses its heartfelt gratitude to all who have supported and participated in this initiative. We encourage more communities, institutions, and individuals across Sikkim to take inspiration from this model, and continue to walk hand-in-hand with nature toward a greener, healthier, and more self-reliant future.
Let every Friday be a day to reconnect, rejuvenate, and grow—with each other, and with the Earth.
