Centre Declares Melli-Singtam National Highway (NH-210) Following Persistent Push by Hon'ble Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang Golay
In a landmark decision, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Government of India, has officially declared the 23-kilometre stretch from Melli to Singtam as National Highway 210 (NH-210) through a gazette notification. This critical upgrade is a direct outcome of the sustained efforts and strategic advocacy of Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang Golay, who has relentlessly championed Sikkim’s need for stronger connectivity with the rest of the country. Thus, the Government and people of Sikkim express deep appreciation to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari for prioritising these vital interventions.
The newly declared NH-210, which begins at the Teesta Bridge junction in Melli (connecting with NH-710) and runs through Mamring and Samardong before meeting NH-510 near Singtam, is entirely situated within Sikkim. It runs parallel to the Gangtok-Siliguri corridor (NH-10), separated by the Teesta River, and will be developed and maintained by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).
This strategic road infrastructure project is not an isolated achievement. It forms part of a larger vision under the current government, wherein improving NH- 10 the state’s principal lifeline has been treated with utmost urgency. The Hon’ble Chief Minister’s numerous visits to the national capital and his unwavering focus on resolving Sikkim’s logistical vulnerabilities have been widely noted and appreciated. His efforts also resulted in the transfer of the 52.10 km Sevoke-Rangpo stretch of NH-10 last year, previously managed by the West Bengal PWD, to NHIDCL. With this, the entire 84.10 km section from Sevoke to Gangtok is now under central management.
NH-10, often disrupted by landslides and severely affected by the 2023 Teesta floods, had long hindered the state’s growth prospects. Bringing its full maintenance under NHIDCL is a crucial achievement that ensures technical expertise, faster restoration, and sustainable upkeep.
For this landmark achievement, due recognition must be accorded to Hon’ble Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) Shri Indra Hang Subba, whose unwavering commitment, consistent parliamentary interventions, and timely submissions have been pivotal in bringing the matter to national attention. Equal appreciation is due to Hon’ble Minister of Roads and Bridges, Shri NB Dahal, whose proactive engagement and steadfast follow-through played an instrumental role in translating proposals into tangible outcomes. Their contributions reflect a shared vision and coordinated effort that have significantly advanced Sikkim’s infrastructural priorities.
The declaration of NH-210 and the reallocation of NH-10 reflect the Government of Sikkim’s clear developmental mandate, building a resilient, well-connected state that is better positioned for economic growth, safer mobility, and stronger integration with national corridors.
