The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was solemnly observed at Namchi District Hospital with a dedicated awareness program organized for the health staff on 26th June.
The event was conducted under the leadership of Dr. Diki W. Phempu, Project Director, Sikkim State AIDS Control Society (SSACS), under the aegis of the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.
The program commenced with the arrival of the Chief Guest, Dr. S.N. Adhikari, Chief Medical Officer, Namchi District. This was followed by an introductory session on Substance Use Disorder (SUD) presented by Mr. Kishor Baniya, Red Ribbon Club Coordinator.
Mrs. Sophia Lepcha, Counsellor, delivered the welcome address, warmly greeting the guests and participants. A symbolic flower pot offering ceremony was held, honoring the Chief Guest and the nine distinguished guests present at the event.
A detailed and informative presentation on Substance Use Disorder was delivered by Dr. Meeshoo Chettri, focusing on the medical, psychological, and social implications of drug abuse.
The highlight of the event was a deeply impactful speech by Chief Guest Dr. Adhikari, who shared personal experiences of aiding in the rehabilitation of two individuals from his neighborhood. His words emphasized the importance of empathy, community involvement, and proactive support in combating substance abuse.
The event concluded with a heartfelt Vote of Thanks delivered by Mrs. Anita Rai, Data Manager, followed by a lunch for all attending staff members.
The program successfully served its purpose of sensitizing the hospital staff on the challenges of drug abuse and the importance of a collaborative approach in tackling this issue.
