Training-cum-Distribution Programme under MIDH 2025–26 Conducted at Maneybong Dentam Constituency
Gyalshing,June 24:
A Training-cum-Distribution Programme under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) for the financial year 2025–26 was successfully organised today at Maneybong Dentam Constituency. The programme was graced by Hon’ble Area MLA-cum-Advisor, Tourism & Civil Aviation Department, Government of Sikkim, Mr Sudesh Kumar Limboo as the chief guest.
The event also witnessed the presence of dignitaries including Additional Director Horticulture, Shri Karma Sherpa, BDO Dentam, Shri Wangdi Bhutia, HDO Dentam, Ms Barsha Sunar, Panchayat Members, departmental field staff, and enthusiastic beneficiary farmers from across the constituency. The programme was coordinated and executed under the leadership and guidance of Mr Karma Sherpa, who played a pivotal role in organizing this departmental initiative.
As part of the programme, Large Cardamom seedlings were distributed to selected farmers, reinforcing the department’s focus on promoting sustainable, high-value crop cultivation. Along with the training, the following essential agricultural and horticultural inputs were distributed under the MIDH scheme:
• Greenhouse Plastics: 20 Nos.
• Bee Boxes: 30 Nos.
• Turmeric Grinding Machine: 1 No.
• Poly Pipes: 12 Nos.
• Agro Shednet (Agro Nets): 20 Nos.
In his address, MLA Mr Sudesh Kumar Limboo encouraged farmers to actively cultivate Large Cardamom, highlighting its significance as one of Sikkim’s most important cash crops with high marketing potential. He praised the department’s efforts in equipping farmers with essential support and called upon the farming community to adopt modern yet locally viable practices.
Additional Director Horticulture, Mr Karma Sherpa, urged farmers to follow proper scientific management techniques in large cardamom cultivation right from pit preparation, spacing and planting to nutrient and pest management. He emphasized that scientific approaches are essential for better productivity and plant health.
He also enlightened the gathering about the recent introduction of drones by the Horticulture Department for the application of bio-pesticides and micronutrients, especially in large cardamom plantations. This advanced intervention has already been launched in Dentam constituency, marking a progressive step in precision farming.
As part of this initiative, two Organic Field Assistants (OFAs) under the One Family One Job (OFOJ) scheme from each block were sent for specialized drone operation training, and are now certified drone pilots actively engaged in spraying operations across Dentam.
The programme also included a technical session on best practices for large cardamom cultivation and interaction between officials and farmers, aiming to build a more aware, skilled, and resilient farming community.
