Enforcement Drive conducted under NTCP COTPA 2003 in Namchi District
Namchi, 24 June :
A concerted effort to strengthen tobacco control measures and safeguard public health, the Health Department, District Tobacco Control Cell, NTCP, District Hospital Namchi, in collaboration with the Police Department, conducted a surprise Joint Enforcement Drive under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003 in Namchi District on 24th June 2025 at Ravangla, Damthang and Kewzing.
Objectives of the Enforcement Drive:
• Raise awareness about the harmful health effects of tobacco use, particularly among youth
• prohibition of tobacco sales to and by minors
• Prohibit the sale of tobacco products within 100 yards of educational institutions
• Prohibit smoking in public places
The enforcement teams inspected shops and restaurants to ensure compliance with the provisions of COTPA 2003. Wherever violations were identified, appropriate notices were issued.
In addition, ‘No Smoking’ signage was distributed and prominently displayed at public places and institutions to promote smoke-free environments and reinforce the message of public health safety.
This coordinated action marks another important step in our ongoing mission toward building a Tobacco-Free Namchi District and, ultimately, a Healthier Sikkim.
