Day 1: Laying the Foundation
The programme commenced on June 17, 2025, with the College Anthem and ceremonial offering of Khadas to the dignitaries. A warm welcome address was delivered by Dr. Dilip Pandey, Associate Professor and Dean of Student’s Affairs, SGLC, who emphasized the urgency of informed career planning in the modern legal profession.
Dr. Jigmee Dorjee Bhutia, Ph.D., the keynote speaker and convener, underlined the role of institutional support in guiding young legal aspirants toward meaningful and diverse professional pathways.
Among the distinguished speakers was Mr. Karma R. Bonpo, IAS, Director of Census and Registrar General of Citizen Registration. He delivered a highly engaging and insightful session on the UPSC Civil Services Examination, discussing the structure, preparation strategies, and challenges of pursuing a career in public administration. Drawing from his own experience, Mr. Bonpo offered valuable guidance to students who aspire to serve the nation through civil services.
Mr. Tashi Rapten Barfungpa, President of the Bar Association of Sikkim and a valued member of the IQAC, SGLC, was felicitated on the occasion as a mark of respect and to extend best wishes for his new role. Though he did not formally address the gathering, his presence was deeply appreciated by faculty and students alike.
Mr. S.S. Hamal, Senior Advocate, Sikkim High Court, addressed the gathering with clarity and inspiration, speaking about the real-world challenges and values of the legal profession. His address touched upon ethics, professional responsibility, and the need for legal professionals to remain grounded and inquisitive.
A highlight of the day was the address by Principal Dr. Tshewang Dorjee Lama, who encouraged students to seize such rare opportunities meaningfully and to value the precious time and insights offered by the distinguished guests. He reminded students that such engagements are a privilege and a stepping stone in their personal and professional journeys.
The formal vote of thanks was delivered by Ms. Binita Kumari Prasad, a 5th-year student, who expressed gratitude to all speakers for their time and shared wisdom.
The session concluded with an open Q&A round and High Tea, allowing students to engage further with the guests.
Day 2: A Conversation with the Judiciary
The second day of the event, held on June 19, 2025, began with the College Anthem and a welcome address by Dr. Tshewang Dorjee Lama, Principal and Associate Professor, SGLC.
Dr. Jigmee Dorjee Bhutia set the stage for the day with opening remarks, urging students to think critically about the future of law in society and their role within it.
The day featured a compelling address by Hon’ble Mr. Karma Wangchuk Bhutia, Principal District and Sessions Judge, Gangtok, who emphasized the intellectual and ethical demands of the judicial profession. He encouraged students to consider judicial service not just as a career, but as a calling to uphold constitutional values and justice.
The final speaker of the event, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Bhaskar Raj Pradhan, Judge, High Court of Sikkim, delivered a deeply resonant address. Rather than offering a monologue, both judges facilitated an interactive and conversational session, urging students to question, reflect, and engage directly.
The format allowed for vibrant exchanges, where students were not merely listeners but active participants. The rare opportunity to "speak with" rather than be spoken to by sitting judges left a lasting impression.
The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Dilip Pandey, who highlighted the importance of such collaborative learning platforms and extended heartfelt appreciation to the judiciary for their time and openness.
Conclusion
The two-day programme marked a significant milestone in the academic calendar of SGLC. It bridged the gap between theory and practice, inspiring students to take ownership of their legal careers with awareness, confidence, and direction. The efforts of the Career Counselling and Placement Cell, led by Mr. Jigmee Dorjee Bhutia and Dr. Sonam Diki Dolma Bhutia, were instrumental in the seamless and impactful execution of the event.
Students expressed their deep sense of gratitude for the enriching experience and eagerly look forward to more such interactive and inspiring sessions in the future—ones that continue to inform, engage, and empower the next generation of legal professionals.
