Leopard captured at Nesurgaon Soreng Busty.
Soreng, June 17:
On 17th June 2025, an adult common leopard (Panthera pardus) male was rescued from Nesurgaon, Soreng Busty under Soreng District by the team of Soreng Wildlife Range. The team led by Range Officer Krishna P Dahal on the direction of Divisional Forest Officer WL West Ms. Nisha Subba had installed leopard capture cage at the said location on 15th June after monitoring its movements using camera traps and strategic planning. Reports of cattle lifting was received from other nearby villages as well but considering the frequency of its sightings and quantum of damage incurred the present location was felt ideal for installing the cage.
Common leopard or Panthera pardus is one of the few big cats found in the Indian subcontinent.Although widely distributed across wide range of habitats, it has been listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red list owing to factors such as habitat destruction and loss, poaching and Human-Wildlife Conflicts. Being highly adaptive common leopards are found straying nearby human settlements often leading to conflicts.
Soreng in particular has seen a gradual rise in human-leopard conflicts in the recent past. There could be numerous factors causing the leopards to stray in human settlements; however availability of easy prey at forests nearby village settlements and availability of abundant domesticated animals to prey upon, the leopards could have been at large. It may be reminded that six 06 male leopards have so far been captured and safely released from human habitation by Soreng Wildlife Range over the past two years from Soreng District alone. And also the Division has timely been providing ex- gratia on cases of cattle loss to the villagers as per the Government norms.
The leopard captured at Soreng was found at the best of its health and after preliminary examination it has been safely translocated to a safe habitat away from human settlement.
