Tree Plantation Drive on World Environment Day
On the occasion of World Environment Day, a tree plantation program was successfully organized at Shanti Sthal, Jalipool, Sikkim, by the Regional Ayurveda Research Institute (RARI), Gangtok, under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Ministry of Ayush, Government of India, in collaboration with the Lions Club, Ranipool, Sikkim.
The event was graced by Shri Raju Basnet, Hon’ble Minister of Education, Sports & Youth Affairs, Law & Parliamentary Affairs Department, Government of Sikkim, as the Chief Guest, along with Ms. Tara Sharma, Station House Officer and Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ranipool.
A total of 50 medicinal plant saplings were planted, including Haritaki (Terminalia chebula Retz.), Bibhitaka (Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb.), Boke Timbur (Zanthoxylum armatum DC.), Lali Gurans (Rhododendron arboreum Sm.), Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana), and Pakhanbhed (Bergenia ciliata), all known for their traditional and therapeutic uses in Ayurveda.
Leading the program from RARI was Dr. Achintya Mitra, Assistant Director In-Charge, along with other staff and officials of the institute. Dr. L. P. Sharma and other members of the Lions Club of Ranipool actively participated and facilitated the event at the local level for successful implementation. The event was coordinated by Dr. Animesh Sen, RARI, Gangtok.
Around 50 participants attended the event, including students of Shree Kanchaneswar Mahadev Veda Pathashala, Ranipool, who inaugurated the program with Vedic chanting, adding a traditional spiritual essence to the occasion. A lecture highlighting the significance of environmental protection and the role of medicinal plants was also delivered to raise awareness among the attendees.
As a gesture of encouragement and goodwill, the Lions Club of Ranipool distributed umbrellas to the students of the Veda Pathashala. The program underscored the collective responsibility toward environmental conservation, in line with the global theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”, and mitigated the harmony between traditional knowledge systems and modern environmental actions
