Successful Organization of Day 3-Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan in Gangtok District
As part of the nationwide campaign to promote sustainable agricultural practices and farmer welfare, the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan was organized today in Gangtok District, Sikkim. The campaign, aligned with the vision of the Government of India to ensure holistic development of the agriculture sector, was conducted simultaneously at two venues viz., Rakdong-Tintek and Samdong Kamble.
The initiative witnessed enthusiastic participation from the local farming community and marked an important step toward strengthening the rural economy through informed agricultural practices and awareness about government schemes. The event attracted a total of 195 farmers from across the villages of the block, comprising 113 male and 82 female farmers. The inclusive participation from both male and female farmers highlighted the growing awareness and involvement of women in agriculture and allied sectors.
The program was led by Dr. Janak Kumar Singh, Subject Matter Specialist in Plant Breeding from KVK-East Sikkim and was further enriched by the active participation of Dr. Shaon Kumar Das, Senior Scientist from ICAR-Sikkim Centre. Senior officials from key departments of the Government of Sikkim, including Mr. Passang Tamang, Additional Director of Horticulture; Mr. Yogesh Sharma, Joint Director of Agriculture; Ms. Didup Bhutia, Horticulture Development Officer; Dy. director, Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, and Mr. Surendra Bhandari, Assistant Director of Fisheries, played instrumental roles in sharing technical expertise and detailing relevant departmental schemes.
Local field staff from all line departments worked collectively to mobilize farmers and ensure their meaningful participation. Their combined efforts provided farmers with a comprehensive view of support systems across agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, and fisheries, promoting an integrated approach to sustainable farming. Members of the local Panchayat also joined the program, underscoring community-level support and collaboration.
Interactive farmer-scientist dialogues formed a core component of the event, with open Q&A sessions allowing farmers to voice their challenges and receive tailored advice. The dialogues created a vibrant space for experience-sharing and fostered trust between the farming community and the government machinery. Particularly encouraging was the active involvement of women farmers, who participated in large numbers, shared field experiences, and expressed interest in venturing into floriculture, vegetable cultivation, and dairy entrepreneurship.
Speaking at the event, senior officials and agricultural experts reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering farmers through capacity building, timely information dissemination, and inclusive growth models.
Overall, the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan in Gangtok district proved to be a resounding success, creating awareness, energizing the local agricultural ecosystem, and bridging the gap between policy and practice. It demonstrated the power of grassroots engagement and participatory development in the agriculture sector.
With the overwhelming response from farmers and the proactive role played by various departments, the district is well-positioned to continue its journey toward agricultural transformation and rural prosperity.
