The Department of Cooperation, Gangtok District successfully organized a day-long program on 30th May 2025 under the aegis of the International Year of Cooperatives-2025 events, centered on the theme “Roles of Cooperatives in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”. The event aimed to raise awareness and enhance the understanding of the significant role that cooperatives play in achieving inclusive and sustainable socio-economic development.
The program was graced by senior officials including the Additional Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Joint Registrar, Senior Audit Officer (Sr. AO), Deputy Registrar, and Assistant Registrars of Cooperative Societies (ARCS), highlighting the department’s commitment to strengthening the cooperative movement in the district.
Distinguished resource persons from the Department of Commerce, Nar Bahadur Bhandari Government College, including Dr. Bhuwan Chettri and Ms. Deeki Dolma, delivered engaging presentations on the integration of cooperative values into sustainable development strategies. Their insights emphasized the potential of cooperatives to contribute meaningfully to the realization of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
A financial literacy camp was also conducted by the Branch Manager of SISCO Bank, Gangtok Branch, focusing on empowering members of cooperative societies with essential financial knowledge and tools for economic participation.
The event saw the active participation of the President of all Multipurpose Cooperative Societies (MPCS), along with representatives from various cooperative sectors, reinforcing the importance of collaborative efforts in grassroots development.
This program reflects the Department's continued efforts to foster capacity-building, promote sustainable practices, and strengthen cooperative institutions in alignment with global development goals.
