Sikkim Legislative Assembly Secretariat Marks 50th Statehood Anniversary with Student Outreach and Educational Tours
Namnang, Gangtok, 28th May 2025:
As part of the golden jubilee celebrations marking 50 years of Sikkim’s Statehood, the Sikkim Legislative Assembly Secretariat welcomed students from three educational institutions for structured study tours of the Assembly premises. These visits were aimed at deepening civic understanding among students and promoting awareness about democratic processes and institutions.
28th April 2025 – Sikkim Government College, Burtuk
On 28th April, the Secretariat hosted 55 undergraduate students from Sikkim Government College, Burtuk. Accompanied by two faculty members, the students were introduced to the functioning of the state’s legislative system. The session included a detailed overview of legislative procedures, the roles and responsibilities of elected representatives, and the significance of transparency in governance. The visit served as a practical extension of their academic learning, particularly for those studying political science and related disciplines.
6th May 2025 – PM Shri Government Senior Secondary School, Singtam
On 6th May, 40 students from Class XII (Humanities stream) of PM Shri Government Senior Secondary School, Singtam, along with four accompanying teachers, were welcomed by the Secretariat. The visit formed part of the school’s curriculum on civics and governance and provided students with a firsthand understanding of the legislative process. Discussions focused on the structure of the state government, the stages of law-making, and the vital role of citizen participation in a democracy.
26th May 2025 – Amitabha School, Gangtok
Most recently, on 26th May, the Secretariat had the pleasure of hosting 19 students from Grades V and VI of Amitabha School, Gangtok. The young learners were accompanied by their Director and members of the teaching staff. The visit was part of the school’s civic education initiative and aimed at introducing students to the basics of democratic institutions. The students toured the Assembly premises and engaged in interactive sessions with Secretariat officials, who explained the legislative process in an age-appropriate manner and emphasized the importance of democratic values.
These educational tours reflect the Sikkim Legislative Assembly Secretariat’s commitment to fostering civic engagement and educating the youth on the principles of governance and democracy. By opening its doors to students from across the state, the Secretariat continues to promote transparency, public education, and inclusive participation in the democratic process.
