Visit of Accountant General (Audit), Sikkim to Melli Dara Agriculture & Horticulture Farm, Namchi District
Namchi, 28th May 2025 —
Smt. Narmadha R, Accountant General (Audit), Sikkim, along with her audit team, visited the Melli Dara Agriculture & Horticulture Farm, Namchi District today. The delegation was warmly welcomed by a team led by Smt. Nirmala Moktan, Additional Director, Agriculture Department, Namchi, who was present to receive them along with other senior officials from the Agriculture and Horticulture Department.
During the introductory session, the visiting team was briefed on the various agricultural and horticultural activities being carried out at the farm. Shri Wangyal Lepcha, Deputy Director (Agriculture), Namchi District, presented an overview of the farm’s manpower structure and highlighted key agricultural activities currently in progress.
The major agricultural initiatives presented included:
Avocado plantation adapted to local agro-climatic conditions.
High-density maize plantation for improved yield per acre.
Field trials of six maize varieties conducted by the Field Crops Section, Krishi Bhawan.
Development of two nurseries under Agroforestry to support sustainable plantation efforts.
Establishment of one grow-out test greenhouse under RKVY to promote advanced crop propagation.
A functional poultry litter composting demonstration unit set up to encourage sustainable composting practices.
Upcoming plans for soybean seed production, aimed at enhancing local seed self-sufficiency.
The horticulture activities were presented by Ms. Pritika Rai, Farm In-Charge and Horticulture Inspector, who briefed the team on orchard development, nursery maintenance, and the management of horticultural crops such as raising of papaya seedlings, growing French beans, raising seedlings of chilies, and transplanting of seedlings of bottlegourd, cucumber, and bittergourd.
Also present during the visit were the Deputy Project Director (Dy PD), ATMA, Agriculture Development Officer (ADO) Sumbuk, Agriculture Inspector cum Farm In-Charge, and all staff members of the farm.
The visiting team toured the farm premises, observed ongoing operations, and interacted with departmental staff. They appreciated the department’s initiatives to promote sustainable agriculture, scientific farming practices, and efficient use of available resources.
