Gangtok, 19 May 2025 The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA)Gangtok conducted an orientation program on Disaster Management at Holy Cross School Tadong 6th mile, today The primary objective of the program was to familiarise the students with the earthquake safety protocols “Drop, Cover and Hold” and “Stop, Drop and Roll” for fire safety and ensure that the students and staff were prepared for a real-life emergency situation. The program covered various topics, including Hazards, Vulnerabilities, Preparedness, Mitigation, and the importance of being prepared and resilient. Further specific vulnerability of the school and surrounding area to different types of disasters was also assessed and discussed . Wherein the potential hazard within the school building and surroundings was identified . Ways to undertake alarm as an early warning system relevant to the school were discussed. . Safety measures during different disasters were covered . Emergency Preparedness at School was also discussed . Creating a basic emergency kit (water, food, first-aid, torchlight, whistle etc.) in case of Emergency was elaborated. . Safe meeting places during the disaster were identified ways to and store important documents digitally were explained. . Knowing emergency contact numbers. The program also included a detailed discussion on the process of conducting a mock drill, which included steps such as sounding the alarm, executing the response plan, evacuation procedures, headcount, and post-drill evaluation. The formulation of the School Disaster Management Plan (SDMP) was also thoroughly discussed. The session was highly interactive and successfully raised awareness among students about staying safe and prepared during disasters. The program had the presence of Ms Bijeyta Kharel (Training Officer) DDMA Gangtok along with Kunchokla Bhutia DM Co-ordinate, Pemba Tamang DM Supervisor and Alister Rai DM Supervisor along with School teachers and students.
