Inspection Report on Illegal Garbage Dumping and Sanitation Issues at Ban Jhakri Falls
As per the direction of the District Collector, Gangtok, a joint inspection was conducted at Ban Jhakri Falls to investigate the issue of illegal garbage dumping at Rani Khola and the foul odour emanating from stored garbage near the entrance gate of Ban Jhakri Falls.
The inspection was led by the SDM, Gangtok, and the Deputy Director, DDMA, Gangtok.
The inspection team had the following officials:
• Shri D S Subba, DCSO, Gangtok and his team,
• Shri Ringzing Bhutia, Dy.Dir -Sanitation cum Designated Officer Food Safety, Health Department.
• Shri Durga Chettri, Assistant Scientific Officer, SPCB
• Ms Meena Pradhan, Assistant Commissioner, GMC, along with her team
• Shri Bishnu Lal Pandey, BO Forest, along with his team
During the inspection, it was observed that garbage had not been disposed of for over a month, leading to significant accumulation near the storage area. This has resulted in a foul odour, making the vicinity susceptible to the outbreak of various diseases. To manage the overflow, some of the garbage had been illegally dumped at Rani Khola. However, during the inspection, it was found that the illegally dumped waste had already been cleared from the site.
The Manager of the property was directed to dispose of all remaining garbage immediately in coordination with GMC officials. Additionally, as a precautionary measure, he was instructed to vacate all staff residing in the quarters attached to the garbage storage area until it is completely cleared and properly sanitized.
The inspection team also reviewed the kitchens of all restaurants operating within the Ban Jhakri Falls premises. It was found that domestic LPG cylinders were being used, which is against safety regulations.
Further, proper dustbins for waste management were not found in several establishments. Penalties were imposed by the respective departments wherever violations of garbage management, food safety, hygiene, and sanitation guidelines were observed
