Badminton Association of Sikkim Holds Its Annual General Body Meeting for 2024–2025
The Badminton Association of Sikkim (BAS) convened its Annual General Body Meeting (AGBM) on April 6, 2025, at Hotel Ramada, Gangtok, in the presence of Executive Members, district representatives, club delegates, coaches, and officials from across the six districts of the state. The meeting, chaired by Smt. Tshering Palden Bhutia, Deputy Mayor, Gangtok Municipal Corporation. The session commenced with a welcome address by Shri. Sukanta Das, General Secretary and in the Presidential Speech the outgoing President Shri. C.Zangpo, who expressed gratitude for the support received during his tenure and shared a comprehensive reflection on the achievements and milestones of BAS over the past year. Following formal permission from the Chair, the house unanimously approved the Annual Report 2024–25 and the Annual Financial Statement after thorough discussion and review.
The highlight of the meeting was the formal handing and taking over by the new Executive Body. In a traditional ceremony, Khadas were offered to the President elect Shri. Jacob Khaling and the incoming new office bearers as a mark of respect and goodwill. The newly elected President Shri. Jacob Khaling delivered a heartfelt address, thanking the outgoing President Shri. C.Zangpo for his visionary leadership and tremendous contribution to the growth of badminton in Sikkim. He assured the house that he would work closely with the team and take the legacy forward with renewed zeal and inclusivity.
The Hon’ble President Shri. Jacob Khaling also expressed his profound gratitude to the Hon'ble Chief Minister, Shri Prem Singh Tamang, for his unwavering support to BAS and for graciously accepting the role of Chief Patron of the Association. He emphasized that the Chief Minister's patronage would significantly bolster the development of badminton in the state and inspire athletes to achieve greater heights.
A key resolution passed during the meeting was the amendment of Clause 14 of the BAS Constitution, to restructure the Executive Council for broader representation. The house unanimously approved the creation of four new posts of Senior Vice President, filled by:
Smt. Tshering Palden Bhutia
Shri. Jigmee Namgyal
Shri. Subash Tamang
Shri. Francis Rai
Additionally, four respected senior members were appointed as Advisors to the Association:
Shri. P.T. Gyamtso
Shri. C. Zangpo
Shri. Prabhakar Verma, IAS
Shri. Y. Kazi
These changes aim to strengthen the leadership structure and draw upon the wealth of experience available within the badminton fraternity.
The house also adopted the Subcommittees of BAS, as proposed in the Executive Committee Meeting held on March 12, 2025. The list of subcommittees was shared with all delegates in a circulated folder.
The Tournament Calendar for 2025–26 was approved, featuring flagship events such as:
1. Inter-School Team & Individual Badminton Championships-2025
2. All India Chief Minister’s Cup Open Badminton Championship-2025
3. 2nd Edition of the Sikkim Premier Badminton League-2025
4. State Ranking Badminton Tournaments.
5. State Championship.
6. Summer & Winter Badminton Coaching Camps.
Additionally, the President constituted a committee to study the feasibility of scheduling Ranking Tournaments prior to National Championships, and emphasized that players must participate in Ranking Tournaments to qualify for the State Championships. Top-ranked players in the BAS State Ranking will be eligible for National Level Championships A mandatory selection tournament will be held prior to each national event to finalize the State Team.
The meeting concluded with the Vote of Thanks from the Vice President Shri. Tshering N Gyatso, where gratitude was extended to all delegates, outgoing and incoming office bearers, subcommittee members, and volunteers. The BAS reaffirmed its commitment to fostering grassroots talent, enhancing competitive opportunities, and promoting badminton as a sport of unity and excellence across Sikkim.
