ROPEWAY AS A MODE OF URBAN TRANSPORT SOLUTION IN GANGTOK
On 6th February 2025, the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Sikkim Shri P.S. Tamang ( Golay) chaired a high-level meeting to discuss the state's readiness for the ropeway project. Urban Development Department Officers, Key stakeholders, including potential investors and were present to deliberate on the project's scope and implementation in alignment with the Sikkim Ropeway Act, 2023.
Gangtok is envisioned for a transformative change in its urban transport infrastructure with the introduction of a modern aerial ropeway system. Designed to ease traffic congestion and boost tourism, the ropeway project aims to offer a scenic, efficient, and sustainable alternative for both residents and visitors. The city has long grappled with traffic congestion due to the rise in private vehicle ownership, linear road alignments, reduced road space, and increasing trip lengths.
Addressing these challenges, the ropeway system promises to alleviate urban traffic pressures while enhancing the city's aesthetic appeal and accessibility. In addition to improving mobility, this project is expected to generate significant employment opportunities and support local livelihoods.
The Urban Development Department (UDD) provided a comprehensive briefing to the Hon'ble Chief Minister, detailing the necessity, feasibility, and multifaceted benefits of the cable car system. Traffic characteristic data, groundwork assessments, and future pathways were thoroughly presented. The discussion also covered the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, emphasizing a revenue-sharing framework and annual fixed financing. Key challenges and strategic recommendations were deliberated in depth, leading to the decision to proceed with the Detailed Project Report (DPR) preparation. In honor of Sikkim's progress and 50 years of Statehood, the project has been aptly renamed the Golden Jubilee Cable Car.
The UDD presentation was spearheaded by Shri Jitendra Singh Raje, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, alongside Smt. Yogeeta Rai- Secretary, Shri Shailendra Sharma-Principal Chief Engineer, Shri Bhupendra Kuthari-Chief Engineer (Ropeway), Shri Dinker Gurung-Chief Town Planner, and Shri Niranjan Kapil-Urban Planner.
This initiative underscores Sikkim's commitment to sustainable urban development and innovative transport solutions, positioning Gangtok as a model city in the region.
