Press Release from (BAC) Dzongu Mangan District-13th January 2025
Information & Public Relations Department
Dzongu successfully celebrated the annual Namsoong Festival at the Namprikdang ground from 10th to 12th January 2025. Known as Namprikdang Namsoong, this event has been a cornerstone of Lepcha culture since 1976, marking it as the oldest Namsoong festival in history.
Namsoong, the festival of the Lepcha community, is celebrated both in individual homes and collectively at a central venue, showcasing the community’s rich traditions, culture, and cuisine. Historically, the Namprikdang ground has been the heart of these celebrations. However, the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) on 3rd October 2023 devastated the Namprikdang ground, washing away its infrastructure and forcing the temporary suspension of the festival.
Thanks to the financial support of the Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang Golay and the efforts of the Hon’ble Minister and Area MLA Shri Pintso Namgyal Lepcha, the Namprikdang ground was restored, and the festival revived this year.
A key highlight of this year’s celebration was the participation of the Block Administrative Centre (BAC), Dzongu, for the first time in 50 years. The BAC showcased a Photo Gallery cum Exhibition Stall, featuring:
• The natural beauty and uniqueness of Dzongu.
• The traditions, culture, and heritage of the Lepcha community.
• Vintage photographs of Dzongu’s people and landscapes.
. Old artefacts of the Lepcha community.
This initiative aimed to highlight Dzongu’s distinctiveness, setting it apart from other regions in Sikkim in terms of geography, demography, accessibility, and communication. Through this effort, the BAC sought to give visitors a unique and closer understanding of Dzongu’s cultural richness.
The exhibition received overwhelmingly positive feedback from organizers, visitors, and officials, inspiring the BAC to pursue similar initiatives in the future. This participation reflects the BAC’s dedication to preserving Lepcha heritage while contributing to Dzongu’s growth and development.
The Block Administrative Centre, Dzongu, extends heartfelt gratitude to the Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang Golay for his unwavering support in celebrating the diverse traditions of Sikkim. His encouragement fosters unity, belongingness, and preservation of the state’s rich history, culture, and cuisine.
The BAC also conveys profound appreciation to the Hon’ble Minister and Area MLA Shri Pintsho Namgyal Lepcha for his relentless efforts in restoring and reviving Dzongu’s traditions. His support has been instrumental in making the Namsoong Festival 2025 a grand success.
