Sikkim secures ₹5 Crore Grant and Technical Assistance in Cities 2.0 Challenge –Component 2 (Climate action through the State Urban Development Department) of the CITIIS 2.0 program.
In a significant achievement, Sikkim has been awarded a ₹5 crore grant along with technical assistance under Component 2: Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation of the Cities 2.0 Challenge, organized by the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). CITIIS, or City Investments to Innovate, Integrate and Sustain, is a sub-component of the Government of India's Smart Cities Mission.
The Cities 2.0 Challenge recognizes innovative and scalable urban development solutions addressing climate resilience and sustainability. Sikkim's proposal stood out for its forward-thinking approach to mitigating climate change impacts while preserving the unique environmental and cultural heritage of the state.The grant and technical support will focus on developing climate-smart urban infrastructure and implementing green initiatives in Sikkim's urban centers.
This recognition by the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs is a testament to Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri P.S. Tamang’s (Golay) unwavering commitment to sustainable development and climate resilience where Sikkim has always prioritized the preservation of our unique environmental and cultural heritage, and this initiative further strengthens our resolve to address climate change while building green and inclusive urban infrastructure.
The Commissioner cum Secretary (UDD), Shri Jitendra Singh Raje expressing delight over the recognition, stated, "This award is a testimony to our commitment to combating climate change and ensuring sustainable development for future generations. With NIUA's support, we aim to lead by example in integrating climate resilience into urban planning." These initiatives aim to enhance Sikkim's ability to address climate challenges effectively and implement replicable models for other states.
This milestone positions Sikkim as a prime member in sustainable urban climate action, reinforcing its commitment to a greener and more resilient future and aligns with Strategic Urban Vision Document-2047 released by UDD.
