Sikkim Science Centre Records Significant Surge in Visitorship
The Sikkim Science Centre, a pioneering facility at Namli near Ranipool, was established in 2008 through a collaborative initiative between the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), Ministry of Culture, Government of India, and the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Sikkim. This centre has experienced a substantial increase in visitor numbers over recent months. This rise reflects the growing popularity of its interactive exhibits, educational workshops, and cutting-edge scientific installations.
Designed to engage students and tourists alike, the center offers diverse learning experiences, including a state-of-the-art digital planetarium, a 3D film theatre, science galleries, an innovation hub, a children’s activity corner, and an expansive science park. These facilities provide visitors with hands-on exposure to scientific principles and real-world applications. The innovation hub, in particular, has attracted 88 member schools that regularly participate in robotics, physical and life sciences, electronics, and computer programming workshops. Career counseling and motivational sessions focusing on STEM disciplines have also proven highly beneficial to students.
In this financial year, schools such as St. John School, Bahai School, Tashi Namgyal Academy, Mt. Zion Kidzee, CCCT Chisopani, Manjushri Public School, Tumlabung JHS, PM Shree Govt. JHS Pakshep Mangan, Brihaspati Parsai Sr. Sec School Ranipool, Harka Maya College of Education, Pachekhani Sec School, Rorathang Sr. Sec School, Linkey Sec School, etc. and many others have taken advantage of the centre’s offerings. From April to October 2024, the centre welcomed 3,181 visitors, compared to 1117 visitors during the same period in 2023—a more than two times increase in the visitorship.
This year's surge in footfall can be attributed to vibrant networking with the relevant stakeholders, strong support from the Education Department, well-maintained facilities, attractive social media presence, and attention provided to every visitor. The centre's inclusion in Sikkim's official tourist itinerary has further strengthened its appeal.
The visitor timings to the Sikkim Science Centre are 10:00 am to 4:30 pm, and it is open on all days including weekends and holidays. It is closed only on Monday. The Centre remains committed to inspiring curiosity and a passion for innovation. The Department of Science and Technology welcomes everyone to explore the wonders of science in an engaging, hands-on environment.
