The first meeting of the Sikkim Commission on Glacial Hazards after its formal notification was held online on 9th Nov, 2024 under the chairmanship of Dr Akhilesh Gupta, former Senior Adviser Department of Science & Technology, GoI. The Commission deliberated on some critical areas related to Glaciers and glacial Lake hazards in Sikkim.
Several members participated including Dr Kalachand Sain Former Director Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Prof Anil Gupta, IIT Roorkee, Prof Rajesh Kumar, Central University Rajasthan, Dr Ashim Sattar, IIT Bhubaneshwar, Dr. Pradeep Kumar, PCCF and Secretary Forests, Ms. Dicky Yangzom, Secretary Mines and Geology, Mr. Dhirendra Shrestha, Principal Director DST and Dr. Sandeep Tambe, Secretary DST, Sikkim & Member Secretary of Commission
Some of the key issues discussed included the need for a GLOF Early warning system, data and knowledge compilation, field visits to GLOF-prone areas, GLOF Hazard zonation mapping, modeling studies for scenario generation, identifying tipping points for low-cost early implementation, outreach activities on GLOF, etc.
