An awareness programme under the 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' initiative, along with the celebration of International Day of the Girl Child, was observed today at Ekalavya Model Residential School, Thekabong Parakha, Pakyong.
The event began with a welcome speech and introduction by Mrs. Dikit Lepcha, Deputy Director/Social Welfare Officer. She addressed the gathering, emphasising the importance of empowering girls, their fundamental rights, safety, and the challenges of gender discrimination. She also led a heartfelt pledge to raise awareness about the 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' campaign.
Mr. Karma Nawang Shenga, Social Welfare Inspector, delivered an insightful talk on how and why the 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' scheme was initiated, stressing the importance of saving and protecting the girl child.
Additionally, Ms. Nuzongmit Lepcha, Project Coordinator of the District Child Helpline Unit, Pakyong, educated the students on safe and unsafe touch, the Juvenile Justice Act, Children in Need of Care and Protection (CNCP), the Child Welfare Committee, children in conflict with the law, and substance abuse. She highlighted the child helpline number 1098, which is toll-free and available 24x7 for children's safety.
Ms. Lepcha also spoke about the constitutional rights of the girl child, social media awareness, the legal age of marriage for girls, the POCSO Act, harassment in any form, and cyber crimes.
W&CDD officials distributed pamphlets providing further information on the department's services.
