Heavy Downpour in Gangtok Causes Widespread Damage, NDMA and SSDMA Issue Warnings
Gangtok, 28 September: Continuous heavy downpours in Gangtok and its surrounding areas have led to significant damage to property and infrastructure. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) have issued a warning, urging residents to remain cautious and take necessary safety measures during this period of inclement weather.
Details of Damages and Inspections
Gumpa Property at Kazi Road:
A portion of the property, which housed the Gumpa, has been completely damaged due to the heavy rainfall. Immediate measures have been taken to cover the damaged portions with tarpaulins. Restoration works have been recommended. The site was inspected by SDMs, Gangtok and officials from the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA).
Landslide at Manbir Colony, Burtuk:
An inspection of the landslide at Manbir Colony, Burtuk was conducted by SDMs, Gangtok, and officials from DDMA. Necessary directions have been given to the Roads NH Wing for carrying out restoration works.
Landslide at Rakdong Tintek Block:
Mr Samdup Bhutia, Area MLA, along with local officials, inspected a landslide that occurred at Rakdong Tintek Block. The situation is being closely monitored for further action.
Footpath Damage near Sai School, Sichey:
The footpath leading to Sai School at Sichey has been completely damaged. A nearby LT pole is under severe threat due to the debris accumulation near the road. The site was inspected by SDMs, Gangtok and officials from DDMA, and necessary debris clearance has been recommended.
Continued Site Visits Under Nandok Saramsa GPU:
On 27th September, the BDO of Nandok, Mr . Gensapa, along with Panchayat members of Nimthang Ward, Mr Dinesh Chettri, and AE and JE from the BAC inspected landslide-affected areas under Nandok Saramsa GPU.
The following day, the BDO, along with Panchayat members of Kopibari Shyari GPU, Mrs Bishnu Maya and Mr Phurba Lepcha, inspected various landslide-affected areas at Middle and Lower Syari in coordination with District Disaster Management Authority, DDMA, Gangtok, officials.
Landslide at Smart Bazar, Sisagolai:
A major landslide occurred last night near Sisagolai. SDM Gangtok and the Training Officer inspected the site. As an immediate measure, the slide has been completely covered with tarpaulins, and the residents and tenants of the house have been evacuated. Roads NH Wing, Power, and Traffic departments have been alerted to take further action.
Landslide at Pengring Chadey Ward, Simik Lingzey GPU:
A landslide has been reported from Pengring Chadey Ward under Simik Lingzey GPU. Disaster response teams and GPU staff have been directed to visit the location with the Panchayats. A few houses are in a dangerous condition, and evacuation and shifting orders have been issued. Tarpaulins are being arranged and will be provided at the earliest.
The administration urges all residents to remain vigilant and report any signs of danger immediately to local authorities. Restoration efforts are ongoing, and all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety of the public.
