A training and demonstration program on “Postharvest Value-addition in Millet” conducted at Pachey Samsing GPK, Pakyong
A training and demonstration program on “Postharvest Value-addition in Millet” and mobile-based service (M4Agri) was conducted at Pachey Samsing, Gram Panchayat Kendra on 19th August 2024 under the CAU-CAEPHT project entitled “Customization, Enhancement & Development of Digital Solutions for Empowerment of Citizens of North East India (M4Agri) funded by Digital India Corporation, Govt of India.
The collaborating institutes for conducting this training were ICAR-KVK, East Sikkim and the Department of Agriculture, Pakyong District.
The program was attended by 61 including both men and women from the local farming communities, and the members of Farmers Producers Organizations and Self Help Groups.
The objective of the training was to encourage women to take initiative in entrepreneurship development, especially on agricultural products through value addition.
The training started with an inaugural address by Mrs. Rebecca Gurung, Deputy Director (Agriculture Department, Pakyong) who welcomed the farmers and farm women to the meeting and highlighted the importance of postharvest processing of agricultural and horticultural produce for income generation of the farmers.
Similarly, Dr. Abujam Anuradha Devi, Assistant Professor and the Project Investigator of the project M4Agri (CAU-CAEPHT, Ranipool), underscored the objectives of the training. She also apprised the farmers about the toll-free number 1800-102-3141 wherein the registered farmers can call to seek assistance about their problems related to agriculture and allied disciplines.
Mrs. Menuka Rai, HDO, Pakyong, informed the farmers about the need to brand local organic farm products through essential processing and value addition.
Dr. Angam Raleng, Assistant Professor (PFE), CAU-CAEPHT, Ranipool Ranipool shared a presentation about the nutritional benefits of millets and the different value-added products that can be made from millets.
Mrs. Binita Chettri, Agriculture Inspector, Pakyong, gave a summation of the various agricultural activities that are going on in the Pachey Samsing GPU, and she also urged the farmers to practically implement the knowledge gained from the training.
Mrs. Anushree Gogoi, Senior Technical Officer, ICAR- KVK, East Sikkim taught the significance of food sanitation, proper packaging and labeling. She also gave hands-on training on bakery products with millets and she emphasized the incorporation of millets in local products.
Mr. H.B. Gurung, Panchayat President, Pachey Samsing, applauded the efforts taken up by CAU, KVK, and the Agriculture Department for the development of the farming community and requested the gathering to bring up products from millets for selling in the local and the national markets.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks to all the participants and with the hope that Pachey Smsing will develop as a model village for the value-added products of millets in Sikkim.
